On Tuesday 3 March, we attended a Parliamentary reception organised by the Blood Cancer Alliance (BCA), of which we are a member. Hosted by Paul Davies MP, the event provided a platform for blood cancer charities to talk directly to MPs and peers. It was a brilliant opportunity to raise the profile of lymphoma at the heart of government and discuss the most pressing policy issues facing our community.
It also provided an opportunity for the BCA to respond to the recent National Cancer Plan, which was welcomed as having the potential to drive real improvement in blood cancer care and support. The BCA was especially pleased to see the inclusion of the new target to reduce the proportion of cancers diagnosed in emergency settings. The BCA has some exciting plans to support in this area and hopes to work in partnership with the NHS and the DHSC to deliver these efforts.
Other measures highlighted included the recognition of the need to retain specialist care centres for complex cancers, every patient having access to a Clinical Nurse Specialist, and new prehabilitation provision.
